You may remember a post a few days ago on the qualities of a productive workplace. After writing that, it got me thinking about productivity at work. And, I started thinking about the main reasons a business ends up with problems.
So, it leads to me writing something of a follow-up article today. I’ve got the two main causes of unproductivity written below:
Slow Technology
Technology is a vital part of every business. When it works, your company becomes way more productive. But, when it doesn’t work, then things tend to slow down. How many collective hours have you wasted waiting for pages to load on a slow computer? How many times have you stood waiting for papers to print out at a snail’s pace? When technology slows down, you waste a lot of time. This is time that could be spent doing other things and being more productive.
The obvious solution to this is speeding up your technology. My advice is to ensure you upgrade your computers if they’re seriously old. Old technology can be really slow compared to the modern stuff. Also, you need to regularly clean your hard drive to ensure there’s plenty of memory, and your PC isn’t slowing down. For slow printers, you could use things like Managed Print Services.
This helps you optimise your printing, and can speed things up. Where possible, look for things that help speed up your current technology, so you don’t have to spend big buying lots of new stuff. Naturally, with computers, they could reach a point where they’re far too old, and nothing more can be done. So, buy new ones like I said earlier.
Unmotivated Employees
Having a strong team of motivated employees can help your business become highly successful. The key word being ‘motivated’. If your employees lack motivation, then your company becomes unproductive. This is where you rely on your management skills to keep everyone focused and willing to work. For me, it’s important that you show your employees lots of attention.
This is something I touched upon in the previous article I mentioned at the start. Let them know that you care about them, and that they’re valuable to you. If an employee feels valuable at work, then it puts them in a positive mindset. They’ll be motivated to work even harder and please you even more. People are only motivated to work hard when they enjoy working for a company.
Think about how many people complain about their job every day. They go into the office and don’t try their best because they don’t enjoy their time there. So, make your employees look forward to coming to work. It shouldn’t be a chore for them; they should love coming into the office. Give them a happy place to work and ensure they’re well-appreciated. Changing the way you treat your staff can have a huge bearing on productivity, trust me.
It’s important that you learn about the causes of unproductivity, so, you can go ahead and sort them out! In doing so, you’ll end up with a business that’s destined to succeed. Of course, don’t forget to create a productive work environment too!
